It's almost time for VBS and we don't want you to miss all the FUN! We have BIG ideas for VBS and need over 100 volunteers. First Reformed VBS is pretty awesome and it's ALL because of YOU! Please OFFICIALLY VOLUNTEER by clicking the Sign Me up to Help button below. If you are new to FRC these job descriptions can help you decide how to best use your gifts and talents. VBS week is the perfect opportunity to be His hands and feet right here in our own community. It's also a great time to meet new people in our Church Family. If you have any questions, just see Dawn or Jamie - you can email them at dawnfranks1990@yahoo.com and gobblejc@gmail.com - or find them at church. They are always happy to talk about VBS! *As a reminder, all volunteers must be high school graduates and older! Shane has an awesome week planned for our Middle and High School Youth!

Vacation Bible School Job Descriptions

  • If you love kids and spending time with them, and want to experience the entire VBS journey, then this is the job for you! Two family leaders will follow our pre-planned trip agenda and travel with their “family group” of 12-20 kids - taking them to the Marketplace Shops, Dramas, Storytellers, Music, and all things along the journey each evening. Each night there’s a prepared short lesson that ties in with the drama and you’ll get a chance to share that with the kids.

Prep for this job is minimal. For best results, you could prayerfully read through the scripture reference for each night and be familiar with the provided mini-lesson for your group so that you can weave the lessons through your conversations with your family group each night. Your family will have a screened tent meeting place to start and end each night.

  • If you’re creative and enjoy crafts (and kids), then this is the place for you! Every evening the kids will visit a Marketplace Shop - where they’ll make a craft that goes along with our theme for the week. Shopkeepers purchase the materials (of course we provide the funds!) and then help the kids make their work of art within a 25-30 time frame. Two groups will visit a shop each evening (1st-5th graders) - and they all make the same craft. Shopkeepers also need to decorate their shop (which is an outdoor tent) and make it fun for the kids!

Prep for this job is shared among those in your shop. Typically someone in the group will take a lead role to organize your efforts. A craft idea is shared but you are always welcome to add in your own creative ideas/touches! Getting to know the other members of your shop during the week is an added bonus! You will have some free fellowship time to visit with other shopkeepers between your scheduled nightly visits.

  • We have a Preschool 3-year-old, 4-year-old, and Rising Kindergarten 5-year-old class and can always use lead teachers/helpers for each class. The Preschool Classes meet inside and have their own schedule. They have a lesson with an activity and usually will get to visit one shop each evening (with a special craft that’s age-appropriate), and then spend some time playing outside. Bring your energy each evening for this fun little group! The curriculum for these classes will be provided but you are encouraged to add in other activities/crafts/fun (of course we provide the funds) to support your class.

  • Do you love rocking babies? Get excited about pushing a stroller? This is the place for you! We provide a nursery each night for our VBS workers and those that attend. We even provide strollers so that you can join in on the drama and push our babies around the village each night.

  • Are you fun and dramatic? Then drama is the place for you! Every night we begin VBS with a short skit that presents a part of our Bible story. We try to think outside the box and make it super fun for the kids. Prep for Drama: You do need to learn your lines but it’s worth the time investment to make the story come alive for the kids. We meet early each evening before VBS for a short practice, then get into costume and set the tone for the evening with Drama. The family groups also visit with a Story Teller each night who weaves in another bit of the story. If you have a flair for the dramatic we would love to have you join us!

  • These guys and gals make the dramas come alive! They bring the MAGIC to our drama performance. Each night they set up a mini tech booth and mic everyone for the drama. They are the unsung heroes. We could not do it without them.

  • Do you have any special skills? Superpowers? Hidden talents? Please consider sharing these with the kids (or with us for props)! Think metal crafting, iron smithing, homing pigeons, historic carpentry, weaving, archery, raising farm or exotic animals? - just to name a few. Please don’t hide under a bushel - share with us and we will consider it when the time is right (your superpower matches our VBS theme/need).

  • Is singing your thing? Teaching kids songs and motions? Then raise your hand high! Prep for Music is so much fun. You will have input on the songs the children learn. You will meet with your team to learn the songs ahead of time. Family groups visit Music every night to prepare for the Music celebration on the last night of VBS. Music will meet in the old sanctuary (think air conditioning).

  • Do you like capturing special moments with your camera? Join us! Just bring your own camera and walk through the VBS village each night capturing the fun and excitement. Share your digital pics with us so that we can share on a bigger platform.

  • Like to cook and work in the kitchen? Chuck and Joellen Misenheimer head up our kitchen crew. Their team will do meal prep, serving, and clean-up. Let us know if that’s your thing too and we’ll connect you with them.

  • See Shane if you have a heart for Middle School and High School Youth and he’ll find a place for you! Shane always needs help with transportation & extra hands.

  • Life happens and we want to be prepared if it happens during VBS. If you don’t mind serving anywhere that’s needed on a given night, this is the place for you.

  • It’s always hot outside and we have lots of thirsty kiddos and adults. We’ll have a table set up outside for our Water Crew to maintain a cooler with cold water and cups for the kids, and bottled water for the workers. This team will purchase the bottled waters (we provide the funds!) and work the water break table area for each night.

  • We covet your prayers for VBS! Prayer is SUCH a big part of our preparation for VBS. We will email you specific prayer concerns as they arise. Always pray for the hearts of all those that will attend - that their hearts may be open to seeing and hearing the word. Also, pray for a hedge of protection for all our VBS workers and their families. Another big prayer concern is for protection of our FRC Church campus during the week of VBS.

Behind the scenes jobs

If you can’t make it to VBS but still want to help we have places for you too!

  • If you’ve never been to a tent party, you won’t want to miss this! Help us transform our campus and set up over 18 tents on Friday or Saturday night before VBS begins. Many hands make the tents go up quickly!

  • Are you good with a hammer? Like fabricating? Have the ability to take a vision/idea and turn it into reality? Then we NEED you! Please consider joining our crew. Let us know if you are interested and we will add you to our crew.

  • Do you have a pick-up truck and/or muscles? Then we need you! Many of our previous props are stored off-site up in the loft of a barn. The week before VBS we make a barn run and need many hands and muscles to lower the props from the loft and transport them to VBS.

  • Tent Party / Barn Run in reverse - On the last night of VBS, we take down the tests, pack them up for storage and return all other items to the barn. Please let us know if you are willing and able!

  • Are you a seamstress? We always need costumes and often there is a bit of prep sewing needed for craft ideas in the shop. We provide patterns, thread, and fabric and we are MOST appreciative of your expertise!

  • Do you love the smell of freshly washed costumes? Then we need you! Our Shop Keepers and Family Group Leaders all wear a VBS tunic/robe. At the end of VBS, all of these need a bit of refreshing before we pack them up for next year.
